Synergy was engaged by Veolia to undertake water,
sediment, sludge and land remediation at Ducos Landfill
which services the entire city of Noumea.
Ducos Landfill was in operation from 1963 and was overfilled, unlined, uncapped and unstable with primitive or non-existent leachate collection facilities. The waste disposed onsite included putrescibles, sewerage, oils, medical waste, building material, tyres and industrial mining waste.
The southern wall of the waste oil basin was extremely unstable and slippage was
increasing, causing environmental risk to the adjacent bay.
The coral reef surrounding New Caledonia had only just been included on the world heritage list by UNESCO and it was imperative that the project was completed quickly so the 25,000m3 of highly contaminated sludge waste would not collapse into the South Pacific Ocean. The aim was to complete the project prior to wet season.
