Synergy was engaged by the Department of Defence to remediate the former rifle range at Stockton, a large area of Land in Fern Bay with areas of heritage significance. The former Department of Defence Rifle Range covers an area of approximately 111 hectares. Environmental investigations at the site identified; heavy metal contamination (predominantly lead), a hydrocarbon hotspot, and widespread fragments of asbestos cement material (ACM).
Remediation works included selective excavation of 32,000m3 of material.
Major asbestos clearance works were conducted through selective excavation and hand collection over an area of 52,488m2. Approximately 24,000m3 material was
reused onsite, whilst the remaining 8,000m3 of lead-impacted material was immobilised onsite and disposed of at a local licensed
landfill. Then backfilling and profiling works to the sand dunes took place prior to
rehabilitation with native plants.
