Synergy was engaged by SafeWork NSW to treat PFAS-impacted water stored in retention and detention ponds at the TestSafe Australia facility in Londonderry.
Operating under EPL 21225, Synergy deployed its mobile water treatment plant to remove PFAS compounds resulting from historic use of fluorinated firefighting foams during testing activities.
The plant incorporates a chemical pre-treatment system using aluminium chloralhydrate (ACH) and polymer flocculation via a Lamella Plate Separator, followed by a multi-stage GAC–AIX–GAC filtration sequence.
Commissioning confirmed full compliance with EPA discharge limits, with treated-water PFAS concentrations below laboratory reporting limits and > 99 % reduction efficiency. The system now operates on an as-needed basis in response to rainfall events, maintaining consistent performance and environmental protection for the surrounding catchment.
Synergy applies specialist design and adaptive system control to achieve high-efficiency PFAS removal within compact site constraints.
The Londonderry project presented a complex challenge: intermittent inflows, limited site access, and the need for rapid mobilisation under regulatory oversight. Synergy engineered a self-contained mobile water treatment system capable of variable- flow operation (1–3 L/s) and automated process optimisation.
The pre-treatment system employs chemical dosing with ACH and polymer to remove suspended solids and PFAS-bound particulates before filtration through a sequence of coal-based GAC, macroporous anion-exchange resin, and coconut-based GAC polishing units. Real-time monitoring, data logging, and NATA-accredited laboratory validation ensure ongoing compliance with EPL 21225 discharge criteria. The system’s flexible layout allows re-deployment across multiple PFAS-affected sites and demonstrates Synergy’s capability in adaptive environmental water-treatment solutions.
“Synergy’s modular water-treatment system at TestSafe Londonderry demonstrates proven PFAS removal efficiency and regulatory compliance, providing SafeWork NSW with a reliable, responsive solution for on-demand treatment of contaminated surface water.”
