Synergy was engaged by Byron Shire Council and Public Works Advisory to demolish and remediate the decommissioned Brunswick Heads Sewage Treatment Plant (STP). The objective of the works was to ensure all unsuitable materials were encapsulated on-site, mitigating health impacts and environmental risks. Works included hazardous material removal, demolition of above and below-ground concrete infrastructure and contaminated soil excavation.

The concrete and trickle filter rock were crushed and processed before burial onsite. All materials removed during the works were buried below RL4.0m AHD in a section of the disused effluent pond, covered with a geofabric marker layer and capped with 5000t of imported VENM. An additional 9500t of sand was imported and placed to fill the remaining effluent pond.
